Organising your herb cabinet in 5 simple steps.

I wanted to organise my herb and spices cabinet for too long now, so with all those free weekends at home now I thought it was about time. If you are one of those people who believe that 'The healing comes from nature and not from the physician; therefore the physician must start from nature with an open mind', then you might find this post inspiring and/or helpful.

In some of my previous posts, I explained how I use some of my favourite herbs as natural remedies whether for hair and body treatments or as herbal beverages for multiple purposes. Today, I will show you how through a few very simples steps you can organise your herbs in a creative way.

1. Empty your cabinet and gather together all herbs and spices you've got at home. Wipe the cupboard shelves and doors thoroughly clean.

2. Go through all of them expiration dates and make sure that all -extremely- out of date items will be disposed.

3. Separate herbs from spices. Some herbs can be used also for cooking, but I tend to keep separately the ones I use for herbal drinks from the ones I use for seasoning. Another reason for this is the fact that the herbs used for teas are most likely organic and hence more pricy.

4. As most of our herbs are originally coming in plastic or paper bags, estimate primarily the amount and the sizes of jars you will require for storing. I usually keep and re-use all empty jars and tins of all sort of products for this kind of purposes, but this time I decided to purchase some new ones from an apothecary wholesale supplier. I always find bulk shopping smarter and more cost-effective.

5. You will also need a label maker to mark all your herbs. I recently purchased this great embossing label maker from Ebay. It was very cheap, easy to use and it works great.

These clear jars with the labelling does not only provide you with a super smart way to organise your herbs, but they are also very satisfying to look at. And while they save you time and stress while cooking, they also help you get a better understanding of what your needs in spices are, so you won't end up buying duplicates at the grocery store.
